If you are looking for a region closer to a city, the township of Otonabee-South Monoghan is ideal! It borders Peterborough and depending on where you are you can be minutes away from it. So it comes to no surprise that one of the main attractions for visitors and cottagers in the area is Peterborough Lift Lock, which is said to be one of the highest in the world and truly an engineering marvel. If you love the taste of wine, go check out the newest winery nestled in the hills of Bailieboro and Otonabee-South called Rolling Grape Vineyard on Country Rd 2, we had the pleasure of visiting this vineyard where we met a wonderful family and enjoy lovely wine tastings while watching the beautiful sunset. Otonabee-South Monoghan is a large area made up of many small towns and communities and pretty much covers a large portion of Rice Lake. These areas have tons of waterfront properties and rental cottages throughout which includes Islandview Harbour, Halls Landing and Bensfort Bridge. Recommendations for a local Marina is the Islandview Harbour Marina, it is an excellent family owned marina with local Kawartha Icecream for the kiddies. They also have a ma and pa restaurant with fresh meals that are absolutely delicious! Our favorite is the fish and chips and the homemade pizza’s. Otonabee-south is distinguished for its fresh food, fishing and family-friendly communities. The region lies within large farming lands which is why there is such an abundance of local high-quality fresh food. There are many farm and field tours that you can participate in or visit that even offer tastings to satisfy the foodie in you!
A sought-after cottage town in the region, is Keene. It was once voted prettiest town in Canada by Harrowsmith Country Life, and is full of Victorian style charm and well taken care gardens. Popular attractions in the area include the historical Lang Pioneer Village Museum, where you can take tours or partake in events that held throughout the year. Horseback riding and motorcycling are significant activities in town. Recommendations for best eats in town is Muddy Pit, which has the best smoked pulled pork and baked beans. Finally, events you can't miss out on are Canada Day and the Keene Pumpkin Festival.
